Brainspotting Therapy in the Chicagoland Area

Brainspotting is an emerging therapy that focuses on the brain-body connection to treat trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and trauma-related mental health disorders. While it is a relatively new type of therapy, studies have shown that brainspotting can be highly effective. What Is Brainspotting Therapy? 

Developed as an advancement of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, brainspotting therapy was introduced in the early 2000s. The therapy uses spots in a person’s visual field to help them process trauma.

EMDR has been highly effective at treating trauma for some patients. However, the founder of both EMDR and brainspotting noticed that for others, getting “stuck” in one spot was occurring, limiting the effectiveness of the therapy. By encouraging the patient to stay in this spot, trauma that is stuck in the subcortical brain can be accessed and processed.

How Brainspotting Therapy Works

Brainspotting aims to “reset” trauma or a particular incident that is stuck in the brain and the body. The therapy generally involves:

  • Beginning with some deep, relaxing breathing.
  • Identifying a spot in the body where distress is felt—remember, brainspotting focuses on the brain-body connection and holds that trauma can be stuck in the mind and the body.
  • Finding one’s “brainspot.” This step involves working with the therapist to allow your eyes to naturally focus when the physical discomfort in your body is strongest.
  • Identifying a point to focus on, such as a pointer rod.
  • Focusing on feelings that are emerging as you focus on this point.
  • Finally, processing the experience post-brainspotting.

Conditions that Brainspotting Therapy Is Used to Treat

As mentioned above, brainspotting was initially developed to treat trauma and trauma-related mental health disorders, including PTSD. However, it has also been used to treat depression, chronic pain, anxiety, and more. Whether or not it is the right therapy type for you depends on multiple factors and is something that you should discuss with your personal therapist.

Advantages and Considerations of Brainspotting Therapy

Before engaging in any type of therapy, it’s important to recognize the benefits and drawbacks of various treatment options. Some potential benefits include:

  • Reduction of trauma-associated symptoms in as little as a few sessions
  • Reduction of negative thought patterns
  • Improved sleep
  • Increased energy

While the benefits of brainspotting have been observed in many patients, it’s important to remember that what works for one patient may not be effective for another. This important new form of therapy is worth considering, but ultimately it’s up to you and your therapist to decide on a course of treatment that best suits you and your wellness goals.
